Jitterbug Jubilant !!

K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple Senior

Smiley face with phoneJitterbug info on box

After my TracFone Nightmare, a Jitterbug phone was–by necessity–my next purchase. It works on Verizon networks. Folks using Verizon phones–here at CARE and the RV Park–are very happy.

It was absolutely, positively necessary for me to have a cell phone for my volunteer responsibilities!! Our Facility Director (Administrator) wants all the residents to have a Jitterbug phone withFive-Star service.

Gospel truth: Activation of my Jitterbug phone (on-line) was very simple and took less  than one hour. After activation, I did not read the manual; I relied on previous experience to set-up. I could not figure out how to get the phone off vibrate so it would ring. I called Customer Service and immediately had a bona-fide, warm-blooded, English-speaking representative. She knew (knows) her product and quickly provided the answer. (“When all else fails, read the manual.”) ~~ I affirmed her repeatedly for prompt and thorough service. I shared with her my “TracFone nightmare.”

The Jitterbug is very “senior friendly.” It is extremely easy to use (IMHO)!! I recommend it (not that I carry any clout). I speculate Jitterbug lives up to their message “We’re people you can count on.”

Savings dollarsComment: For obvious reasons, I did not publish this message until my TracFone was finally activated. If representatives at (and for) TracFone knew I had a working cell phone they might have prolonged my agony?! ~~ I did not want to sacrifice 1800 minutes (thirty hours) and service until May 30, 2015.

True story: Heather had not read my blog!! The SIM card arrived…; I called…. My first question: “Heather will this SIM card pick up a signal from a Verizon tower?” I continued by saying “It will be a waste of our time to install the new card if I can’t access Verizon.” ~~ Heather said “You have service….” ~~ “If you’d read my blog, you’d know there is service in Livingston but not six miles out in the country.”

To her credit, Heather was very pleasant. She said she would send me a CDMA phone and mentioned one model by name and said “It has tiny keys.” I said I’m so desperate to have service I’d take whatever CDMA was available. I added “I’m almost 79 and it might be difficult but better than no service at all.” ~~  Heather said “Oh, this won’t do at all. May I call you back later? I’ll check the stockroom to see what we have.” ~~ She called to tell me a new phone would be coming “overnight” via FedEx. (She had the CARE Center land-line phone number.)

I said “It’s only 4 o’clock there; 3 o’clock here.” The operator said “She is not available. Her hours are 8 until 5.”  (Like a broken record, a voice with an undetermined accent.) ~~ I attempted to “activate” via the TracFone website but the process must happen from my “active” phone to my new phone. Note: One day short of six weeks since I received the first “new” TracFone.

Today is  Friday, Dec. 20th; cell phone arrived Saturday, Nov. 9th.

Wishing you a blessed Jesus’ birthday season !!

December calendar with Love, Peace, Joy Half the month of December is history. I will not have time to prepare cards this year. I considered a Holiday Newsletter but that, too, seems unlikely. Reading my blog is the best way to discover the activities that have kept me extremely busy since late August. Briefly: Decided it was time to leave my volunteer position with JAARS, began to “downsize,” and pack.  I was utterly exhausted because the tasks seemed endless. (“This old lady” had recognized the need to participate in a “caring” community.)

Easy chair on the truckLate September, personal possessions were loaded into a truck and placed in storage. My little T@B teardrop trailer was hitched to the KIA and we three (T@B, KIA & me) headed for Livingston, Texas. (Arrived at the CARE Center on October 8th.) I was immediately recruited to help with the semi-annual “garage sale.” First: pricing; second: sales. I love to shop thrift stores and yard sales; “working” one was a lot of fun.

Lorraine at CAREI didn’t have time to draw a long breath (ha) before I was busy with the numerous activities of CARE volunteers. Too many to list. I’ve been extremely busy for more than two months–and loved every minute!!  What a difference three months makes!! My volunteer job at JAARS was a “do nothing” lack of gratification experience.  My volunteer job at CARE affords dozens of opportunities each day and I know my efforts count.

Christmas NativityI am richly blessed at this precious time of the year: JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON. My Heavenly Father provided the gift of a beautiful 2003 trailer for my “until I die” home. It will be moved to my RV site shortly after Christmas. Early in January, or middle of  the month, my personal possessions will be transported from North Carolina to Texas. I’ll then have a major downsizing project because  it will be impossible to get three rooms of things (from the apartment) into the trailer.

My new RV site.My RV site.Truthfully, I think I still have many years of volunteering left in me. I jumped (prematurely?) into CARE residency because I love to garden. The site came available and I didn’t want to lose the opportunity to claim it. There is a large open area at one side of my (yet-to-be-delivered) trailer home. I’ll set up bird feeders, bird houses, planters, etc., etc., and return to gardening similar to my backyard in North Carolina. (Perhaps I’ll attract another Bluebird couple?!)

In three short months, CARE residents, volunteers, and staff become “family.” I’ve gained wonderful friends!! There was an awesome Thanksgiving dinner; there will be an awesome Christmas dinner. Christmas stockingsThere are sixty-five stockings hanging in the hall to accommodate cards and small gifts. A hay ride and caroling is planned for one evening; a party and gift exchange for another evening.

To become a “resident” of CARE, I needed a complete physical exam and doctor’s evaluation. She wrote “Extremely healthy for seventy-eight years.”  (I attribute that to my holistic life style.) I came to volunteer; I don’t need the services offered here but that day may come. **If** I need assistance, I’ll be able to call–and receive–help from a staff person, or volunteer. (Sad to say, twenty-seven months as a volunteer at JAARS  and not a soul I could call.)

Dear blog followers: Specifically wishing you a blessed holiday season. Thanks for reading my messages. ~~ This blog was prepared in lieu of a holiday newsletter. I’ll attach a link to this blog–in numerous email messages–so friends and family know where I am and what I’m doing.

The Soldier’s Night Before Christmas

The Soldier’s Night Before Christmas.

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster & stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give
And to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind
A sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different, so dark and dreary,
I knew I had found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

I heard stories about them, I had to see more
So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping silent alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

His face so gentle, his room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured a United States soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan,
I soon understood this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night
Owed their lives to these men who were willing to fight.

Soon ‘round the world, the children would play,
And grownups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
Because of soldiers like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone
On a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
my life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

With that he rolled over and drifted off into sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.
I watched him for hours, so silent and still,
I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill.

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
And I covered this Soldier from his toes to his head.
And I put on his T-shirt of gray and black,
With an eagle and an Army patch embroidered on back.

And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
And for a shining moment, I was United States Army deep inside.
I didn’t want to leave him on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, whispered with a voice so clean and pure,
“Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all is secure.”
One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night!

TracFone sleuth !!

Smiley face detective with blue hatIt has become a challenge to HOPEFULLY receive TracFone service for my investment (1800 minutes and service until 5/30/15). I have been doing numerous searches of the Internet and learned beneficial information. Most recent: How to unlock your TracFone. Also: How to Get TracFone to Work on any Network.

The more articles  I read the angrier I get!! If you read all the messages from the customer support department–on my earlier blogs– TracFone Nightmare, TracFone Nightmare–Part Two and TracFone Nightmare–Part Three –you’ll understand (as I now do) that they are playing games with us.

How to Get Tracfone to Work on Any Network

By Sam Surgalski
How to Get Tracfone to Work on Any Network

Tracfones are great prepaid cell phones that anyone can use, whenever they want. There are no contracts, monthly bills or hidden fees. You can buy minutes when you want to use the cell phone. Tracfone is a very popular prepaid company, and many people are now trying to get their cell phone to work on any network. Unfortunately, this is quite a complicated process, as Tracfone specifically made their phones to stop this process of unlocking from happening. While it is possible, it is very difficult, and it is not recommended if you are afraid of breaking your cell phone. If you are courageous enough, go ahead and try to unlock your phone. If it works, you will get unlimited use on all of the wireless networks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  From an article titled Which TracFones are CDMA?
Warning: New CDMA Tracfone devices are not sold in areas that have GSM service. If your location has GSM service, you will need to purchase a CDMA Tracfone when you are in an area without GSM service. Another option is to purchase the phone at the Tracfone Web site. When asked to enter your ZIP code before you begin the search for phones, insert the ZIP code of a location without GSM service. If you enter your own ZIP code, the phones offered will not include any CDMA Tracfone devices.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Be assured, I will add interesting information as I find it. (How do you like my detective clip art?)

My response, sent at 3:45 PM.

Lorraine Edwards,

Hi Lorraine,

Your phone was activated from another zip code.

I beg your indulgence, Catherine. The new LG phone was purchased–on TracFone web site–with the 77351 zip code. All of the attempts to activate were right here at 77351 zip code.  No other zip code has been involved.

As what you have mentioned on your previous message, you got service six miles from your current location.

Yes, I had service “in town.” Not every customer lives in a city with numerous towers scattered around. Worse case scenario: Your TracFone customer with service inside the city limits drives six miles out of town. Her car breaks down and there isn’t any phone service to call for help.  Using your logic, your TracFone phone is satisfactory?!

Please be informed that your phone’s signal strength will vary on your activation zip code. If you permanently moved to another location, we suggest you change your activation zip code which results to a new phone number. Thanks.

Please be informed, Catherine, that support people (via land line conversation) were aware that zip code 77351 is my permanent address. I do not want a new phone number because hundreds of people have my current phone number.

Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry.

Your request to remain patient is falling on deaf ears. I’ve been patient for almost a month. I want a phone that will make and receive phone calls!!

Received the following… and responded at 1:10 PM Saturday, December 7, 2013.

Lorraine Edwards,

Lorraine,

It is shown in our records that your phone was activated in a different ZIP code. Please be advised that the service may depend on the tower’s availability of an area and conditions where you are using the device.

Ava

Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry.

Ava
(–deleted expired web address–)

Ava, “your records” may not reveal the complete information. The (old) Motorola was activated with a North Carolina zip code. However, when I ordered the LG phone—from the TracFone website—I specifically listed 77351 as my location.

If you were the least bit concerned about resolving my “lack of service,” you would advise me of an appropriate phone that will pick up from a Verizon tower.

After a month, I’ve exhausted all my patience!! Please send me a phone that will receive service off a Verizon tower!!

Extremely dissatisfied!!

Lorraine Edwards,

Yes, I understand that. However, the phone is activated with a different ZIP code. This may have caused the issue to begin with. A thorough investigation must be done prior to creating a ticket for technology exchange. Since the phone is activated with a different ZIP code, then either we change the ZIP code or you need to be in the ZIP code where the phone is activated while we are investigating the issue.

Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry.

Ava, I will sincerely, gratefully appreciate assistance in resolving this problem. I can only surmise that none-too-knowledgeable, not-too-competent individuals, sitting at a phone telling customers to punch a series of numbers, were oblivious to location. I explained to one person that I have moved and this is my new location (77351).

THANK YOU for your help!!

Lorraine

~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~

Lorraine Edwards,

If you have moved to a different area, then this caused the issue. The activation ZIP code and the ZIP code of the area where you most likely be using the phone should be matched. If we’ll change your ZIP code to 77351, then the phone number will be changed.

Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry.

Second: Please look at the attached pictures. Note that the Verizon tower is at the edge of the property. ~~ I am in Texas, for the winter, at an RV Park. That’s my little trailer. From inside the trailer, I can see the Verizon tower.

TracFone Nightmare — Part Two

After my earlier blog TracFone Nightmare, and two complaints on theTracFone FaceBook page, I finally received a response (November 30, 4:17 PM).

Theirs:    TracFone Wireless @Lorraine Edwards We’re sorry for the trouble. Let us check your account. So we can resolve your issue, please click on the link to submit a support ticket. (–deleted expired web address–) . Thanks. ^Maria

Theirs:  Thank you! Once we receive your support ticket, we’ll reply to it and do the best that we can to resolve the problem. ^Kurt

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mine:  Read my blog for complete details. Seriously!! Read my blog for details. https://threequartersandcounting.com/2013/11/17/tracfone-nightmare/ ~~~ Furthermore, I have walked all over the 20 acres RV Park, checking…, and no service anywhere. If you can resolve the situation, I will be eternally grateful!! ~~ Lorraine
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Theirs:  My pleasure. I have read your blog and I’m sorry for what had happened. We will check the network coverage in your area. Please also verify if you are receiving an error message when trying to make or when receiving a phone call. If so, what is the error message? Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry. Chelsea

 (–deleted expired web address–)

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mine:  Chelsea, I am delighted that you are trying to rectify the problem.  No, I do not receive any error messages.  “Service unavailable” when I try to dial a call because “no service” message on the face of my phone.
As I said earlier, I walked the entire area about 4 o’clock one afternoon and “no service” throughout the entire area.  All the other (200+) folks that live here are very happy with their Verizon service.  They can even sit inside this building–with a tin roof–and talk on the phone.
When I was upgrading my old Motorola phone (thinking it was past its usefulness), the TracFone web site should have been better about identifying a phone that would work in this area.  Having said that, maybe the phone would be fine “in Livingston” but we are six miles outside Livingston–in a rural area. In fact, the phone was eventually working inside the Radio Shack store in Livingston.
Is there another phone that would provide better service??
This is a “bone of contention”: After I received the new phone (from TracFone), I spent time (upwards to one hour) punching numbers on the computer thinking I would transfer my minutes and service.  Then I was on the phone two separate times punching numbers to (hopefully) initiate the transfer (one & one-half hours). Then the Radio Shack salesman was on the phone for two hours punching numbers before I had service.  This is very frustrating and promotes unhappy customers!!
Thanks!! from Lorraine
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Theirs: Lorraine, please provide me your physical address including the city, state and ZIP code. Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry. Chelsea
 (–deleted expired web address–)

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Theirs:  Lorraine, I have checked the coverage in your area and it shows that it’s not a satisfactory coverage. We only offer 2G on your area. This is the reason why you are having problems with your phone.  Chelsea
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mine:  Chelsea, is there a TracFone that picks up Verizon service??  You said “2G in my area” and I’m supposing that is for my LG phone. We (others) have excellent Verizon service here. I’d gladly get another phone and transfer minutes and service to yet another phone!!  ~~  THANKS from Lorraine

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Theirs:  Lorraine, yes, I am referring to your LG 840G phone. It does not have a good coverage in your area. In addition, we do have phones for the carrier that you have mentioned. We can transfer your phone number and minutes once you get a new phone.
Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry.
Chelsea
(–deleted expired web address–)
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mine:  Chelsea, I appreciate your help BUT  I’m upset that you didn’t answer my question directly.  “We do have phones for the carrier that you have mentioned” does not give me adequate information so I can purchase an appropriate phone.

In truth, nothing has changed!!!!!! I am still without cell phone service!!  I’ll post this information on my blog, and FaceBook, for the world to see.

Respectfully,

Lorraine

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Theirs:  Lorraine, unfortunately, the information regarding the carrier could not be provided in this medium. It would be better if you can give us a call, so we can explain it to you thoroughly. Please contact one of our customer service representatives at 1-800-867-7183, Monday through Sunday 8:00 AM to 11:45 PM EST (Eastern Standard Time). Chelsea
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Note:  I phoned… moments after I received the above message (using a “land line”).  I gave “Donny” the support ticket number but that does not necessarily indicate he (they) bring up the records to see details.  He asked for the serial number and my zip code.  The narrative was the same “canned speech” I’ve heard every time I call TracFone. I got angry and said to “please give me the names of makes and models that pick up a signal from a Verizon tower.”  He couldn’t do that!!  However, he said I need a CDMA phone for Verizon, and my current LG phone is GSM. I told him to tell his supervisor that their “customer service” is a joke and I will continue to post complaints on my blog and FaceBook. Then I went to the TracFone website and started searching for CDMA phones. The search does not recognize CDMA. So I spent an extended period of time looking at individual phones and reading their details. Nothing listed to indicate if the phone is CDMA or GSM. Finally, I searched the web by name (Nokia, Motorola, Kyocera, LG, etc.) and was able to identify CDMA from GSM.

Hours later: I’m no closer to cell phone service than one day ago or twenty-four days ago.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Postscript, 4:00 PM:  I’m normally a mild-mannered nice little old lady.  However, I am on the war path now!!  Below is the message I just posted on TracFone FaceBook page:
I could write an encyclopedia regarding my problems!! Read the lengthy information I published on two blog messages. Check this: https://threequartersandcounting.com/2013/12/03/tracfone-nightmare-part-two/ .  TracFone Customer Service is a joke!! They “talked the talk” but did not “walk the walk.”  I followed their instructions exactly but—-bottom line—they really didn’t help resolve my problem.  My problem?? No service!!
I will continue to post complaints every few days!!
Ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!! This is so funny!!  Below read the message posted by TracFone, on FaceBook, at 3:51 PM.Smiley laughing out loud (better)
Doesn’t that look very similar to the message posted by Chelsea??
Postscript, Dec. 4, 2013, 3:45 PM: I’ve submitted several complaints today–on TracFone FaceBook.  I wonder what response I’ll have.
There was no further communication from “Janet” beyond the message above.
Ever wonder where the TracFone support staff are located??  Dumaguete City, Dumaguete, Philippines. I have an Internet service called StatCounter that identifies the location of individuals (computers) that visit my blog. Chelsea (and others?) read this blog yesterday and their email messages to me correspond with the time-stamp in StatCounter.
Postscript, Thursday, Dec. 5th, 2013, 11:35 AM: Here we go again. Here’s the latest email correspondence—and my response.
Hi Lorraine,
Please be advised that we can only replace a phone due to manufacturers’ defect and due to inavailability of network coverage.
Shelly, read my blogs https://threequartersandcounting.com/2013/12/03/tracfone-nightmare-part-two/  &  https://threequartersandcounting.com/2013/11/17/tracfone-nightmare/  you’ll see that “inavailability of network coverage” describes my problem.
The phone’s technology is supported in the area. The network coverage is fine. We will need to troubleshoot the phone to come up with the best resolution for you.
  • How many signal bars does your phone display? As mentioned in an earlier message with customer support, I have one bar the size of a period (.).
  • What happens when you try to make a call? No service.
  • Did you get any error message? If so, please include the exact error message that you received. No error message(s).
  • Please indicate also the date when the issue started. I have not had service on this phone, at this location, since the first day I received it Nov. 9th, 2013. We eventually got service in the Radio Shack, in Livingston, but that is six miles from where I live.
Thanks.
THANKS for your assistance!!
Lorraine Edwards
Thank you for your patience, while we respond to your inquiry.
