Mimosa tree

Here is a website about the Mimosa tree. More info: How fast will a Mimosa tree grow? And, this is interesting: 1) An invasive plant and 2) Southeast Exotic Pest Plant Manual. ~~ Although I’m better informed about the plant (after the Google search), I sympathize with the lady that planted the tree in remembrance of a loved one. ~~ It is my understanding the new Thrift and Gift Shop will be “set up” where my KIA is sitting, the banner is located, and Mimosa was planted.

I forgot to lock the car

Bad news, good news !!

Bad news: The tarps I ordered are very thin material. The Internet advertisement sounded good but I should have suspected “trash bag” strength because the price was one-third that of other advertisers. ~~ Check my blog: Salvage… to splendid!!

Good news: David climbed the ladder and wrestled the 15′ x 30′ tarp over the high point of the structure. We quickly attached a few bungee cords (so it wouldn’t blow away) and David departed for other projects. I spent the morning making tucks here, folds there, bungees here and bungees there.

Hiccup !!

A strong gust of wind took the sign down TWICE this morning. I could not drive stakes in the ground (hard as cement) so called on David for assistance. Honestly, he couldn’t drive stakes in the ground either!! So David made small slits in the banner so wind could pass through. Furthermore, I moved my KIA into location as an anchor!!

Semi-annual CARE “garage sale”

Three BIG days: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. However, CARE residents, employees and volunteers were able to browse and purchase on Wednesday afternoon. I had my eye on a vintage “hall tree” but it was sold prior to my arrival. I planned to put a climbing plant at the base and let it weave tall and wide through the openings. C’est la vie!! ~~ I bought old sheets to cover large planters when we are threatened with freezing temperatures. This Fall and Winter, too many very large planters to move under shelter. ~~ Green Styrofoam “peanuts” for the bottom of planters. (In North Carolina, I made the mistake of using river rock in the bottom, for drainage, and then planters were too heavy for me to move!!)

On Monday, October 19th, the total (from sales) was announced.

We wish to thank ALL of our Volunteers and Residents for their support, their time and commitment to this year’s Garage Sale!

This cannot take place without everyone coming together for the common goal.

We also want to extend a really BIG THANK YOU to all who donated, shopped or otherwise contributed.

As always it is greatly appreciated.

That being said …. This year’s total from the Garage Sale….was……. $9,135.75

Thrift and Gift

A building has been purchased that will serve as our CARE Thrift and Gift Shop. Here are pictures of the banner I hung this morning.

New hand rail

David prepared a new hand rail for me. Frankly, I’m afraid of falling!! (Stepping off the edge of the step.) ~~ I gave my previous hand rail to the old gentleman with the motorhome. ~~ This rail is “rustic”–but substantial. Why didn’t I replace mine with a new one?? The lumber was available–and free!!

Shopping from home !!

In Livingston, Texas, we don’t have a wide selection of retail stores. (Our Walmart closed many months ago!!) Shopping on-line is so convenient. The last couple of days, I’ve searched (on-line) for camouflage tarps. I have one (from last year’s shelter) but my new larger shelter will require one tarp each direction. I found TarpsPlus.com and like their prices. Moments ago, I completed an order and eagerly await the arrival (within ten days). Before Halloween, I should be able to start moving plants–and clutter–under cover.

Question mark with figure scratching headFrost on pumpkinsLong-time residents tell me “Expect our first frost around Halloween.” How does one wrap their head around ninety degree temperatures (and humidity) in early October and frost at the end of the month??

“Rome wasn’t built in a day”…

…neither Lorraine’s garden!!

Chair for the planterI deliberately planned to NOT work in the garden today. I’m tired; I have aches and pains!! However, David stopped by briefly (en route to another CARE resident job site) and promptly dropped the awning support to a perpendicular position. Then he adjusted the other corner of the awning for the appropriate “dip” for rain water runoff. Therefore, I was obliged (gratefully so) to position the rain barrels and move the mosquito plants/planters. I am very happy with the appearance at that end of the cement block patio.  ~~ Since moving the rain barrels (from original location), I see the cement blocks are not level in that area. There’s another (unpleasant) project for me!! I’m not eager to lift the thirty-seven pound blocks (time and time again) to get more soil under them!!!!

Pleasant morning
