Saga of the watermelon vine

Transplanted watermelon plants

Looking good on May 22nd

Vine on June fifthSee my earlier blog message: Unscheduled. But I couldn’t resist taking pictures of the growth process. ~~~~~~ This blog message was “under construction” (unpublished) because I planned to publish when the watermelon was ready to pick. All my tender loving care–stolen by some sort of wild life. It was still “green” so I hope it got indigestion!!

Is it a watermelon?

Temperature at sevenThe bird bath bubble bath picture was unplanned. The heat quickly causes unsightly green, brown and slim. Birds frequently drink and splash so I like to keep it clean. This afternoon, I soaked it with dish washing soap and bleach. Naively thinking it had cooled somewhat, I ventured out of my air-conditioned trailer (after six) to scrub the bird bath. The sun on the bubbles inspired the impromptu picture. ~~ Some garden plants were watered, some weeds were pulled. Wringing wet with sweat, I retreated to my living room (and my computer).

Heartfelt concern !!

Woman prayingReaders may think I have a singular focus on the heat at my location, and concern for my garden. Believe me, I’m burdened with sadness for millions of people affected by the blistering heat. Southern California was my home most of my life. I know the areas that are burning. My travels took me to Arizona and the location of that huge fire. I’m praying for the firemen, un-sung heroes, doing their job under miserable conditions! I’m praying for the displaced families. I’m praying…

Three years ago…

June twenty-oneRead the blog message I prepared but never published, dated June 21, 2013. I “published” it today so it can be linked to this message (“published” exactly as written). I find it funny and pathetic. The volumes of stuff in my garden was insanity then–and the insanity continues? Very few of the items sold; plants were given away; donations went to Goodwill. However, many of those items went into storage with my household things and later transported to my present location. You can see them in my garden,

Fels-NapthaToday, I stumbled quite accidentally on this message as I searched my blog messages for “Fels-Naptha.” I thought I might find the homemade insect repellent recipe in one of last year’s messages. (No, not on an earlier message but an Internet reach provided this information.)

Best laid plans…

For weeks, I have saved tree limbs, twigs, leaves and weeds for my handyman, David (for his landfill). This afternoon, CARE maintenance hauled it away. “They” knew I was saving for David. To borrow a line from Rodney Dangerfield “I don’t get no respect.” That’s one way to look at it but–on the positive side–“they” were concerned the brush pile might harbor a snake.

Lots and lots of limbs

To my surprise…

…thTea cup with happy faceere are major health benefits in molasses.

It’s no surprise to my readers that I am constantly drawn to web sites and magazine articles about health and nutrition. This web site article about molasses caught me by surprise. “Why didn’t I know that?” Rather than organic raw Agave (low-glycemic sweetener), I plan to use certified non-GMO molasses in my morning cup of green tea.

Dandelion rootLikewise, I may sweeten Dandelion Root tea and Ginger tea that way. Yes, I drink a variety of “herbal” teas because of their health benefits. ~~ I’m growing both Dandelion and Ginger in my garden. I’m eating Dandelion leaves in my salad; I’ll “harvest” ginger root early next Spring.
