Try turning the can upside down first. On most cans you can also open them from the side instead of the top. If neither of those works with the can opener, you should be able to apply light pressure, like lifting the tab would, to open the can.
Thanks for the suggestions. FYI: The bottom of the can is “molded round.” No “lip” for a can opener. My neighbor pulled out his keychain with “an Army can-opener.”

What I should have said was, the bottom probably doesn’t have such a deep edge. You can probably open it normally by just turning it upside down.
