Preparing for a cruise

.

A trip into Livingston specifically to visit thrift shops–looking for a rolling suitcase. First stop: Habitat for Humanity. As always, I was warmly greeted at the counter (they know me because of my donations, and previous volunteering). I told the clerk what I was looking for and a second lady disappeared…, and returned with the two (yes, two) for $20.00. Nested inside is a second somewhat smaller suitcase. I don’t “need” two… but “the price was right.” It wasn’t planned but my KIA headed to Dollar Tree where I spent $51.00 on “small stuff” for cruise. Sure, I could (can) put shampoo, etc., in smaller containers but the small product containers are “cute.” I bought two of everything so I can prepare a gift bag for my friend who grasiously invited me to join her on this cruise.

Feels like “summer” !!

.

In my humble opinion,“don’t turn on the A/C in early April.” I haven’t an ounce of energy; I’m so lethargic!! What’s a Texas resident supposed to do? In a few days, another “cold front” will play havoc with our weekend. If you are following the weather reports across the nation, severe winter weather in multiple areas. ~~ I have one window open, at the rear of the trailer, and the front door (only door) is open. I’d open other windows for cross ventilation BUT impossible. This trailer fits like “hand in glove”  between the timbers that support the roof. ~~~~ Yours truly has a plan: This evening, walk across the street to the air-conditioned Clubhouse and watch two movies. Mary Poppins Returns and Lorraine will be there.

Triple digit ?!

.

Late afternoon sunshine pushed the registered temperature higher than accurate. But TV meteorologist said “90 degrees”  in some localities (near Houston). ~~ Poor choice: I’m eating left-over beans (for supper) because I want to empty the pan. I need to make nectar for the Hummingbird feeders. “Yes,” Hummingbirds have arrived.

Nancy Drew (type) mystery !! (revisited)

My copy of Mennonite Family History just arrived in the mail (12:30). I eagerly opened the envelop and scanned the list of contents. “There I am, page 77.”  I’m always surprised; I never know which story they will publish. (If this looks familiar, it was a blog message on 5 August 2018.)

The following is the comment I attached to an individual in my Ancestry family tree.

This isn’t remotely a connection to “my” family tree. It all started very innocently (yesterday) when I was documenting a “shirt tail” relative. But the name “Remen Happreck Peters” appeared as a child of Jonathan Peters. That name didn’t make sense (imho) so I set out to find–and document–the individual. It has taken hours but I’m confident I have all the accurate information. I suspect someone transcribing Census records couldn’t read writing (lol) and Carrie Happock became Remen Happreck. ~~ The name, and locality, did not “fit.” I found her with another set of parents (with the same names) in the proper locality. ~~ My “Nancy Drew” mystery is solved and I can return to Frantz/Garst family history.

There’s more to the story, of course. Personally, I strive for excellence; I attempt to have my information accurate (right down to dotting the “i” and crossing the “t”). It makes me so angry when I check my information against other individuals family tree. They are so careless!! Sometimes ten or more individual family trees have the same misinformation (because they copied…). I shout at the computer sometimes (directed at the culprit): “Don’t you check your information? You have each child listed three times!”

Recently, due to extreme heat and frustrations, I’ve spent a lot of time indoors on Ancestry.com attempting to correct all the misinformation that has crept into the Frantz family tree. I published Frantz Families–Kith & Kin in 1996. The information is readily available including the website. Every individual is listed with sources, in the published book. There’s no excuse for wrong dates and locations.

It’s almost three o’clock and I’m still in my nightgown. My only meals the last couple of days: watermelon, peaches, strawberries, protein bar, coffee, and iced tea (“fast food”). I can’t tear myself away from Ancestry. Well, preparing my blog messages is pretty addictive, too, and I thought I had a good topic for today.

Twenty-five years ago, I thought it was my God-given assignment to document the Frantz family–and collateral lines. Now I want to correct the data on Ancestry before old age clouds my memory. I offer thanks to my Heavenly Father for reasonably good memory, and reasonably good health, at eighty-three years of age.

Perhaps I’m the only one to find “a new find” heartwarming. Two days documenting the “Peters”  family led me to the “Angle”  family. Carrie Happock Peters had a sister named Louiza who married James Daniel Angle. During earlier documentation, I could say (to myself) “I’ve been there; I know that area” (genealogical research trips). Now I could exclaim “I know that family; I was in the home of a descendant” (in Rocky Mount, Virginia). The memories brought me to tears!! I had been attending the Garst Family Reunion in Salem, Virginia (2004). Just before it ended, an “extended family” member invited me to their home in Rocky Mount. At her home, she served me a tomato sandwich (homegrown large yellow tomatoes). True story: I had never eaten a tomato sandwich!! Numerous family members greeted me; I visited several homes; I was an overnight guest. I can distinctly remember the beautiful quilts adorning the wall, and second story balcony rail, of an attractive log house. I was in the presence of my Old German Baptist Brethren “cousins.” More recently, several days ago, I was documenting Old German Baptist Brethren, and Church of the Brethren, extended family members. I thought I got side-tracked but it was a (Divine?) circle right back to ancestral roots. I don’t travel any more but memories are precious of those earlier years, earlier travels.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way !!

“Divine Intervention”?? The wind grabbed the greenhouse and upturned it. I saw that I could get the cover off. For months (seriously), I have told visitors “If I had another pair of hands, I could get the cover off and repair the framework.” Not one single soul said they would be glad to help me remove the cover. I’ve hoped for a “handy person” but s/he is non-existent. ~~Flowers are my reward after hours in the yard.

Power outage…

…rudely interrupted “60 Minutes”  last night. Six-twenty PM when the TV screen went dark. Lights “on” across the street so I went to the neighbors to the left, and behind. Limited number of residents without power. Everywhere I walked, I picked up fallen limbs and carried them back to my burn pile. What else could I do? Nothing!! Went to bed at 8:10. Power restored at 12:40 AM. ~~ After a good night’s sleep, and after my coffee, I plan to tackle more items on my “to do” list.

For the record

I have a stack of bills but they are one-dollar and not one-hundred dollar bills. A total of $105.00 in yard sale “income” with $40.00 for the newspaper advertisement. You’ll agree with me that is a very poor return on my many hours of preparation and set up?! Today, I need to decide whether to reword an ad for the newspaper. Perhaps I’ve priced the BIG items too high? What should I do??

In less than one month, I’m going on a cruise with a lady-friend, another resident here at Rainbow’s End. I hoped the yard sale would pay for my relaxation and change-of-pace. On my “to do” list, decide on clothes to take on the trip. Do I still have a suitcase? I need to check the cargo trailer.

My RV refrigerator has “given up the ghost” so time to spend BIG bucks for repair. Gratefully, I have the house-type refrigerator in the laundry room. ~~ I’ve neglected the leaky kitchen sink faucet so time to call a plumber.

Do I want to be “front and center” for the occasional yard sale customer?
